A new service has launched at North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, as the health setting looks to revamp its specialist women’s services and plan for the future.

Although the service was previously offered at North Tees and Hartlepool, the appointment of new staff means that the urogynaecology service will be “highly specialised” according to the trust.

The new team includes the trust’s first ever urogynaecology nurse, Sadie Hewson, who joins urogynaecology physiotherapist, Natasha McManus, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist Santhosh Puthuraya, and clinical director in obstetrics and gynaecology, Elaine Gouk.

The trust will now set about its long-term plans, which includes obtaining official accreditation from the British Society of Urogynaecology and continuing to improve its women’s specialist service provision, improving outcomes and flattening health inequalities.

Sadie Hewson, urogynaecology nurse, said: “This specialist service means we can be here for women whenever they need our help. My role will involve being that point of contact for our patients – I am here to not only provide expert care but to be that person to help answer questions or concerns.

“Along with a specialised physiotherapist and a strong senior team, we are here to help women across the Tees Valley and beyond.”

Amongst other things, the new urogynaecology service will look into a range of different women’s pelvic floor complications, including bladder and incontinence symptoms, vaginal prolapses, and pelvic floor dysfunction.

Santhosh Puthuraya, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, added: “The appointment of Sadie is fantastic news for the organisation. The ambition of the service is now to become established, keep developing and improving in order to help our patients as much as we can.”
