Technology and Human Rights Division

Multiple Locations Considered

The newly created Technology and Human Rights Division is seeking an Associate to provide administrative support to an 11-person team.

The division focuses on two areas of work: a) investigating and advocating against the role of technology in human rights abuses globally and b) using technology to research and expose human rights abuses.

The Associate will provide a range of administrative and project management support to the division’s staff who are based in multiple locations and facilitate the production of research and advocacy products. Knowledge of the main human rights issues related to technology is helpful but not required. We are looking for someone with strong organizational and communication skills, an ability to prioritize, and comfort to work in a dynamic and globally dispersed team.

This full-time position will ideally be based in one of our European offices (Amsterdam, Brussels, Berlin, London), and reports to the director of the division.

Due to COVID-19, many of our global offices are operating in reduced capacities. The successful candidate may be required to work remotely if local mandates necessitate. We recognize that this moment, during the pandemic, is a uniquely difficult time for most people, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.

Responsibilities:

1. Provide day-to-day administrative support to Technology and Human Rights Division staff, such as scheduling, making travel arrangements, preparing for and taking minutes at meetings, submitting expenses and invoices, and responding to requests for information;

2. Track, structure and maintain the division’s files and documentation regarding budgets, expenses, research, published work, trainings, and donor reports;

3. Maintain communication between Human Rights Watch offices, global staff, and external partners;

4. Proofread, format, and/or distribute materials such as reports, news releases, briefing papers, letters, op-eds, web content, and coordinating the publication process and translations of the different products;

5. Record, track, and process divisional finances and divisional donations;

6. Assist with basic desk research;

7. Assist with events such as advocacy meetings, staff meetings, and fundraising functions;

8. Assist with recruitment processes, including the coordination of interns; and

9. Carryout other duties as required.

Qualifications:

We are eager to hear from candidates who can perform the essential functions of this role even if they do not meet all of our desired qualifications – particularly if they are from backgrounds underrepresented in the NGO or tech sectors.

Education: A bachelor’s degree, equivalent training, or equivalent relevant administrative experience is required. Those with a passion for human rights work are encouraged to apply.

Experience: A minimum of one year of full-time relevant work experience is required. Previous work, internship, or volunteer experience in administrative functions is advantageous.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Prior office/administration experience, attention to detail, flexibility and strong organizational skills are required.

2. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English is required; competence in other languages is desirable.

3. Ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently, as well as function as a member of a team with staff in multiple locations is required.

4. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks are required.

5. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is Experience in or a willingness to learn image/video editing and graphics design software is desirable.

6. Commitment to human rights is required.

7. Experience using a Drupal content management system is desirable.

8. Understanding of the major global human rights issues related to technology is desirable.
